About the Event

The Three Day City Retreat is a silent meditation retreat best for sincere, dedicated and experienced meditation practitioners in the search for an answer to the fundamental question of life.   Participants should make prior arrangement to avoid distractions, and be mentally and physically prepared for a rigorous daily schedule from 8am to 9pm for the first two days and to 5pm for the last day. 

Shorter retreat duration with the minimum of one day, might be accepted for the following days if space allows.

One Day: August 24

Two Days: Aug 24 & 25

The daily practice consists of a series of 30 to 45 minute sittings, walking meditation and eight-form moving meditation. In between, there will be light physical exercises and simple stretching yoga. Individual interviews with the teacher for guidance related to the practice during the retreat are available when needed.

Retreat Teacher:Ven. Guo Xing, DDM Chan Hall Master.  Dharma talks will be delivered in Mandarin Chinese with Engish interpretation. Ven. Guo Xing speaks Chinese and English.  

Application: Attending the retreat will be by submitting online application form and subject to admission reviews. The number of retreatants will be limited to ensure the quality of retreat and COVID-19 considerations. Volunteers of the Centre will be given priority of admission as a reward for their support to the Centre. 

Fee:  $180  Payable upon admission notice.  Please note “3 Day Retreat” and the attendee name upon payment.  Payments over $60/Day will be treated as donation.  Payments less than $60/Day due to financial affordability are acceptable. Vegetarian lunch and dinner are included.   

Notes:  The Centre provides meditation mats/round cushions/towels. Wear comfortable clothing suitable for sitting meditation, no shorts or tank tops.  Masking is required except for the time on cushion and meal time.  No cell phone, reading, notes taking, recording during retreat at the Centre.  

Venerable Guo Xing

Born in 1953 in Kaohsiung,Taiwan, Venerable Guo Xing followed Master Sheng Yen, the Founder of Dharma Drum Mountain, and has practiced Chan since 1984. He became a monastic in 1986 and, later, a Dharma heir of Master Sheng Yen in 2005. He was the guiding teacher of Nung Chan Monastery meditation group and the Meditation Promotion Centre in Taiwan, as well as the Abbot of Chan Meditation Center and Dharma Drum Retreat Center in New York. The Venerable is currently the Vice Abbot of DDM, the Chan Practice Center Managing Director, and the Chan Hall Master.

The Venerable said his life came late after becoming a monk at the age of 33. Upon becoming a monastic, he mastered the Chinese Buddhism classics and the mind cultivation method of the Chan school.. Since 2011, he has led numerous meditation retreats applying the methods of Samatha-Vipasyana, Silent Illumination, and Huatou in Taiwan, the United States, Canada, Australia, Moscow, Poland, Hong Kong, Singapore, etc.. The Venerable promulgates the dharma of no-self as taught in the Surangama Sutra, the Complete Enlightenment Sutra, the Vimalakirti Sutra, and the Sixth Patriarch's Platform Sutra, to people from all over the world.
